Server and Forum Migration!
« on: July 29, 2014, 03:20:36 PM »

Your attention please, We will be switching server ips and the forum address, for hopefully the last time.
Killje has info to get us a higher memory server for about half the price of our current one, and it will allow less lag in the programs to have them all in one place.
There will be no change to the world or anything in it.

There are multiple benefits to our users including:
A second world that is just creative building!
Faster response times for color portal creation.
and the renewed assurance that the server will continue to exist long into the future and that we will be constantly looking for ways to make it better! ;)

The exact time will probably be in another month. We need to wait for GP to update.

i thought about dekkubo's question a bit more and came up with a general checklist of stuff we need to do.
the times might change depending on problems we run into.

day 1.
  • scorp buys the new server.
  • creating empty clone of forums.

day 2.
  • checking if empty clone forum has everything the same (not message and boards but the plugins)
  • hiding empty clone forum
  • setting up temp welcome message on new webpage
  • announcing new web and server address and that the server will go down in 2 days

day 3.
  • setting up the server and checking if all plugins work

day 4.
  • shutting down old server
  • old forums go read-only (no one can post anymore)
  • downloading server map
  • downloading forums

day 5.
  • uploading map
  • uploading forums
  • final check forums and map

day 6.
  • unhide new forum
  • redirect page on old forum
  • remove whitelist from server so everyone can join
  • sit back and relax

Why would we have to shut the old server down before the new one is up?
we could do:
day 4.
Old server: Everyone becomes guest (non-buildable)
Old Server: Broadcaster filled with info about the new server and increased in broadcast time
Old forums go read-only (no one can post anymore)
downloading server map
downloading forums

day 5.
uploading map
uploading forums
final check forums and map

day 6.
unhide new forum
redirect page on old forum
remove whitelist from server so everyone can join
Shutdown old server
sit back and relax

This would allow users to take inventory of their stuff if they wanted to and plan out the new things they are going to build!

Another question,,, Do you have a back up plan for the back up plan?
in other way to ask that question .. Do you have a plan Bee? cause it would bee sad when everyone is buzzing mad, if something happens

at any point in the migration the server files should be in two places
only when everything is running and working we remove the old server and even then we have a backup
so should there be any problem during the migration, we can start over again.
